Throughout the past year, we've had three telethons. Telethons are an immediate way to reach out to the community, including those who may not be familiar with us and our services. Two of them were with Fox40 in Sacramento, where we received wonderful support both from the station and from the viewers.

Our largest telethon was with KRCR-TV in Redding during the Carr Fire. For a 12-hour period, volunteers and staff of The Salvation Army worked with on-air personalities to promote the event. Sinclair Broadcasting, owner of the station, shared the online donation opportunity on a national level. We were grateful for this level of partnership - and for the community reaction it evoked.

At one point, a homeless man visited the TV station during the telethon. Kim Butters, Director of Development for The Salvation Army Del Oro Division, spoke to him. He had $6 in his pocket, and he wanted to give it to the wildfire relief efforts.

"He wanted to be an example to others," Ms. Butters said. "I am really impressed that somebody who had so little was impacted so hugely by what he saw. I was touched by his generosity."

In all, $400,000 was raised during this telethon - most of it from North State residents. The community saw how their neighbors were hurting, and gave all they could. Some people who lost their homes even donated.

All involved were deeply touched by how fully the community pulled together. And The Salvation Army has been putting every penny of that money toward initial and long-term recovery.
