International News: The Salvation Army Responds to Earthquake in Papua New Guinea
On Monday, February 26th, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit in central Papua New Guinea that affected over 10,000 homes in Hela and Southern Highlands. So far, the earthquake has calmed 16 lives and more than 300 people have been injured. Travel in and out of the remote region has been extremely difficult as roadways and airstrips have been severely damaged, and destruction to telephone networks and power has obstructed communication.
Plans are being developed to send teams of specially trained responders, including health professionals, to distribute food and other essentials to 500 households in Hides. A second phase will also take place to help homes in the more remote regions of Hides and Gobe.
