The Salvation Army Assists Volcano Victims in Guatemala
The Salvation Army is helping people affected by the eruption of the Fuego Volcano in Guatemala. Layers of ash has covered some communities, and in some areas the ash is too hot for evacuation to be possible. Thousands of people are living in emergency shelters, and the number of fatalities continues to climb.
Salvation Army emergency teams traveled to the affected areas to aid and assess the situation. They have established an alliance with the National Committee for Emergencies and Disasters, and the team has moved to areas of direct impact in Escuintla and Alotenango.
A vital part of the response it to provide victims with spiritual and emotional support, and to conduct a needs assessment.
The Salvation Army plans to offer ongoing help in areas of greatest impact, and funds have been set aside by International Headquarters to provide assistance.
